Not all abortions are the same. In an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus, it becomes necessary to end the pregnancy in order to save the mother's life. In these situations, it's not possible to simply "take the baby out" as the embryo is not viable and the mother's life is at risk.

So, a miscarriage? That is not the same thing as an abortion.

Waiting for an ectopic pregnancy to result in a miscarriage is extremely risky. 95% of ectopic pregnancies are the result of a fertilized egg implanting in one of the fallopian tubes. The embryos eventually grow large enough to rupture the fallopian tube and severe, life-threatening, internal bleeding begins.
