Take professional sports for example. Lebron James salary is $44 million per year. The lowest salary for an NBA player is around $1 million per year. The difference is salary between Lebron and the last man on the bench is severely more significant than the suggested wage gap between men and women. Is it unfair for player #15 on the bench to be paid so much less than Lebron? Similarly, the highest paid NHL player makes $13 million per year. About 1/3 of Lebron's salary. Is this fair and equitable? The point is that evil has always existed in the world in some form. The US has made more progress than any other country in moving towards equal opportunity than any other country that has ever existed in the modern era. With that said there will be some people who still mistreat others based on their immutable (Race/Ethnicity, Gender, etc.) qualities. This may be reflected in some personal situations. However, there is no evidence that pay discrimination between men and women exists primarily based on a person's gender. Simply because there is a disparity does not mean there is an *ism as the cause of the disparity. Here are some of the reasons some men received higher wages than some women.
- Men are more likely to negotiate with employers
- Women are more likely to work part-time to care for family and children
- Women are more likely to work in lower paying jobs
- Men change jobs more frequently often increasing their salary with each move
The gender wage gap, like most of these issues, are multi-varied and cannot be easily summed down to one cause or solution.
