When asked about his previous comments, he doubles down. He has also made deplorable comments about other minority groups such as members of the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants. Examples are when he said, "laziness is a trait blacks," in 1999. A more recent example is from 2015 when he said, "They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." His policies during his presidency did not respect minority rights which are granted to United States citizens under the Constitution in Article V. His campaign and presidency led to an increase in hate crimes. In 2014, "Law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports involving 5,479 and 6,418 offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, gender, gender identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity." From 2016 to 2019, these numbers have increased to the 7,000s and 8,000s. These numbers can be found at fbi.gov. While correlation does not equal causation, Trump was and is a very prominent person. He had and has a large influence on citizens of the U.S.; if the leader of our nation thinks it is okay to diminish minorities, then it must be okay for us to as well. I cannot support a person who can only keep power by putting others down.
