It makes sense to block someone imprisoned for assault charges from buying a gun, but what if the crime was simply downloading a 20-year-old game for free that was never released in the USA? And also, if a disturbed man is about to shoot up his campus but doesn't have a noted history of mental health issues or a criminal record, he won't be stopped. Besides, the vague blanket of "mental illnesses" can range anywhere from anti-social disorders that make them apathetic towards others to issues like ADHD and OCD.

preventing someone with a federal crime or serious crime from buying a gun makes sense. Having check ups for mental health every few years if you own a gun or a certain amount of guns.

People are labeled a criminal because they commit an offense. If someone commits an offense of any kind, they should not have the privilege to own a firearm.
