Is it the government's role to regulate businesses to protect the environment, even if it means lower profits for those businesses?
Yes, profits are at all time highs for large corporations. The governments job is to protect the general welfare of people which includes the land we live in, corporate profit targets are irrelevant to government policy.
The role of government is not to pick winners or losers, but it is to protect the foundation that we all depend on to survive and thrive. If a business makes its money by harming the environment, there needs to be a high cost for that.
