I feel that there is a fine balance between simply teaching that our institutions are inherently racist and teaching that our institutions are racist and we are striving to change that. History is ugly and unforgiving to how we feel. That being said, I do think that history needs to be taught bluntly, but with appropriate nuance. The things that have happened were harmful to the people of the time and have negatively affected later generations, why is that? What has been done to correct it? What can we continue to do to correct it? On top of this, I do feel that these subjects need to be taught with care. Children are not responsible for the sins of their ancestors, so we should try to teach these things without making children feel guilt that isn't theirs to feel.
